Re- manufactured SA HW gearbox end covers.

The Sturmey Archer Heavyweight (HW) 3-speed gearbox used on Brough Superiors needs, due to the special exhaust system, an extra long kick start shaft. Using a standard gearbox end cover usually ends up with the cover cracking due to the increased leverage. The original cover used by GB had a quite sturdy boss supporting the shaft. As these are no longer to be found at auto jumbles, a friend of mine has decided to re-manufacture a few.

The covers have been cast in aluminium alloy from a purpose built pattern. You can see the sturdy boss supporting the extended kick start shaft.
This is the assembled gearbox. The cover casting has been made quite a bit bigger on the circumference, so the edge can be blended in to the contour of any SA HW gearbox shell.

A 50's Norton kickstart shaft and bearing bush can be altered to be used with this cover. The bush needs shortening a bit. In order to keep the original kickstart lever which is fitted with a cotter pin, the shaft end has been altered. If you leave the splines on, you can also use a Norton lever.
